A thorough digital sorting solution for leafy greens is on the way, with Key Technologies exhibiting its Veryx system at Pack Expo in Chicago.

At stands E-7118 and S-2147, Key will show off what it bills as the only belt-fed sorter in the world to use top and bottom sensors to inspect product entirely in-air, picking up all foreign material and product defects including insect parts, paper, wood, rocks, plastic and glass.

“Leafy greens present a sorting challenge because of the way leaves can overlap or clump as they are conveyed through the sorter. The fatal flaw of other sorting systems, in addition to having less effective product handling, is that their top sensors inspect product on the belt,” said Marco Azzaretti, advanced inspection systems product manager at Key.

Top sensors can’t effectively see through leaves, explains Azzaretti, meaning they can miss foreign material sandwiched between layers. “Veryx achieves true full-surface inspection of the product stream – no foreign material can hide from its sensors,” he said. “Veryx systems have been successfully processing leafy greens in facilities worldwide. They’re field-proven.”

Pack Expo International will be held in Chicago, Illinois, from October 14-17.
